Faceted Bowl

Yona Tubi
3H x 5.75 x 5.75

This bowl was made by Yona Tubi, a Yemenite Israeli potter with whom I apprenticed for a year back in 2010, when I was still making pottery of my own. It reminds me of cold mornings in her studio, when we'd use a kerosene heater to warm up bowls of water to dip our fingers into while we were throwing on the wheel. At the time, she'd just picked up this faceting technique from her own teacher, a potter and mystic from Safed, and she was so enamored by it that she spent months making pots that looked just like this. "Yona" means "dove" in Hebrew, which is why she incorporates a dove into her signature.
